The dissertation investigates the issues of regional development and region possibilities to increase value added by using unique resources of the regions in the context of EU integration processes. The main object of research is regional policy decision-making processes requiring adequate economic assessment of regional uniqueness aiming effective use of unique resources of the region for social and economic development. This object is important not only to the state or regional level but also at the EU level with the aim to exploit regions basic skills and resources that can be unique from the perspective of other regions and to use competitive advantage. The primary purpose of this dissertation is building the theoretical concept that would serve as a base for  the methodology creation of complex economic assessment of regional uniqueness that in the next stage would serve as an instrument for the implementation of EU regional policy.

The paper approaches a few major tasks such as highlighting the importance of economic assessment of regional uniqueness in the light of globalization processes and creation of theoretical concept that can be used for the economic assessment of uniqueness of the region.

The dissertation consists of Introduction, 3 chapters, Conclusions, References and 5 Annexes.

The introduction reveals the investigated problem, importance of the thesis and the object of research and describes the purpose and tasks of the paper, research methodology, scientific novelty, the practical significance of results examined in the paper and defended statements.

Chapter 1 is devoted for investigation of the problem by situation analysis and literature review. Analysis of economic theories is developed and possibilities to use it for the assessment of regional uniqueness are discussed. Remaining part presents theoretical concept. Chapter 2 defines methodology of the economic assessment of uniqueness of the region. Chapter 3 is devoted for the results of empirical research for the EU regional policy assessment and the case of Lithuanian regions. By the end of this chapter possibilities of using this theoretical concept in the future and suggestions on future development are provided. Conclusions are drawn by the end of all chapters.

6 articles focusing on the subject of the dissertation are published: five articles – in the journal quoted by Inspec data base, one article – in material reviewed during international conferences. 5 presentations on the subject have been given in conferences at national and international level.
