The dissertation examines various technologies that could be used for individual domestic wastewater treatment. The main aim of the thesis is to design an economical, user-friendly and effective technology for individual domestic wastewater treatment.

The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, general conclusions and recommendations, references, a list of the author‘s publications and annexes.

The introduction discusses the research problem and topicality of the thesis, describes the research object, formulates the aim and objectives of the thesis, describes the research methodology, scientific novelty and practical value of the thesis, presents the defended propositions. In the end of the introduction the author‘s publications on the topic of the dissertation as well as the structure of the dissertation and acknowledgements are provided.

The first chapter is assigned for the review of scientific literature. The analysis of small-scale wastewater treatment units as well as the review of alternative technologies that could be used for individual domestic wastewater treatment are presented here. In the end of the chapter the conclusions are formulated and the objectives of the thesis are revised.

The second chapter provides the methodologies for the lab-scale and field-scale experiments: experimental set-ups, media used, course of the experiments, statistical analysis methods are described and composition of wastewater fed to the set-ups are presented. Finally the methodology for the designed wastewater treatment technology trials is provided.

The third chapter provides the results of the lab-scale and field-scale experiments on the suitability of various media for individual domestic wastewater treatment. The last section of the chapter describes the technology for individual domestic wastewater treatment which has been created with reference to the experiments mentioned above. It also presents the results of the trials of the wastewater treatment unit that was designed and fabricated on the grounds of the technology created.

Fourteen articles on the topic of the dissertation have been published: two in scientific journals referred in the ISI Web of Science database, two in scientific journals referred in other databases, four in foreign international conference proceedings, six in national conference proceedings. On the topic of the dissertation four presentations at international and six at national scientific conferences were given.
