This doctoral thesis analyses the thermodynamic efficiency bound by functional efficiency of a solar microclimate system in a building by applying systematic, thermodynamic, heat and mass exchange and parametric analysis methods. The effect of such a system on the end user of the building is analysed. Along with its main function – ensuring an adequate thermal environment, the system must be thermodynamically efficient. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the thermodynamic efficiency and the correlation that integrates functionality for a lowenergy building as a solar microclimate system.

The thesis focuses on several main objectives: first, the influence of the thermal capacity of walls on the building energy demand is analysed; second, a solar microclimate system is analysed from the thermodynamic point of view; third, an algorithm to reduce exergy expenditure of building services is compiled by combining the methods of thermodynamic and functional analysis.

The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, general conclusions, a reference list and a list of publications on the topic of the thesis by the author as well as six appendices.

In the introductory chapter the research question and the relevance of the thesis are discussed, the subject of the analysis is described, the purpose and the tasks of the thesis are formulated, the methodology of the analysis, the scientific novelty of the thesis, the thesis statements are described, and the publications on the topic of the thesis published by the author, presentations in conference and the structure of the thesis are presented.

The first chapter presents the requirements for solar microclimate systems. Solar microclimate systems as well as assessment methods applied to the analysis are reviewed. The literature review allows to establish the research direction and to formulate the goals that allow fulfilling the purpose of the analysis.

The second chapter presents the compiled thermodynamic assessment algorithm for a system that uses solar energy when passive and active microclimate systems and the level of the indoor thermal comfort are taken into consideration. Action algorithms and the compiled mathematical models are described.

In the third chapter, the results of the assessment of the thermodynamic and functional efficiency of the solar microclimate system are provided. The results are obtained by applying the assessment model compiled by these systems.
