Description

The book is provocative academic discussion of the last century’s Western urban concepts, ideas and theories that had a lasting effect on the practices of urban planning and on the understanding of the city and the problems of its growth. The introduction contains author’s reflections on the present state of urban studies in Lithuania as well as his insights into the role of mind and imagination in urban planning and understanding the city. The first part is discussion of the rise of ideas of modern planning, represented in the theoretical writings of Camillo Sitte, Ebenezer Howard as well as Le Corbusier and his ideological associate Sigfried Giedion. The second part of the book covers the variety of urban concepts and ideas represented by such figures of Western urban thought as Lewis Mumford, Constantinos A. Doxiadis, Jane Jacobs, Kevin Lynch and Christian Norberg-Schulz all of whom exposed various reasons, effects and consequences of modern urbanism and urbanization and who provided their own original visions of urban future and prospects of cities. The third part of the book is a discussion of some most recent tendencies in urbanism and urban thinking and contains chapters on the concepts of consuming city presented by Steven and Malcolm Miles, creative city drawn by Charles Landry, homo creativus in a contemporary city - popularized by Richard Florida, the urgent prospects of sustainable city outlined by Herbert Girardet and integrality of urbanism drafted by Nan Ellin.
