In order to prevent the formation and development of low temperature cracks in asphalt pavements, it is necessary to select a bitumen for the asphalt mixture production that is resistant to low temperature cracking and, if it is not available, to repair and properly maintain the appeared cracks. Improperly repaired and maintained low temperature cracks result in a shortened pavement lifetime and increased costs for the maintenance. To efficiently use the funds allocated for the maintenance of roads and to ensure the asphalt pavement’s resistant to low temperature cracking, it is necessary to create a bitumen selection algorithm designed for the evaluation of asphalt pavement resistance to low temperature cracking.

The aim of this thesis is to determine the limiting values of the bitumen stress relaxation modulus and its slope considering the formation and development of low temperature cracks in the asphalt pavements. The thesis consists of an introduction, three sections, general conclusions and recommendations, references and a list of scientific publications by the author on the topic of the thesis, as well as a summary in the English and nine annexes. In the introduction, the problem is formed, the relevance of the thesis is described, the object of the thesis is provided along with the aim and tasks, the research methodology, scientific novelty and practical value of the research findings are also provided, and the defended statements and structure of the thesis are given. The first chapter provides the concept of low temperature cracking in asphalt pavements, as well as bitumen and asphalt mixture test methods that define the formation of low temperature cracks. In order to limit low temperature cracking, a theoretical algorithm is created to evaluate the asphalt pavement resistance to low temperature cracking and an experimental research is conducted to validate that algorithm, which are described in the second chapter. An analysis of the severity of low temperature cracking and the lowest surface temperatures of the asphalt pavements are included. Also, the chapter includes an evaluation of the bitumen properties (limits of the linear viscoelastic behaviour range, the stress relaxation modulus and its slope). The third chapter provides a determination of the limiting values of the bitumen stress relaxation modulus and its slope, with respect to the formation and development of low temperature cracks in the asphalt pavements and a revised theoretical algorithm. The application of this algorithm for the selection of bitumen with regard to the lowest surface temperature of the asphalt pavement, and the estimated economic effect of the application of the algorithm are included.

On the topic of the thesis, 13 scientific articles were published: 7 – in scientific journals included in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, 2 – in the Clarivate Analytics Proceedings data base publications, 4 – in the scientific conferences materials.
