The PhD thesis deals with the characteristics of biogenic substance migration in the Lithuanian riverbank sediments and its impact on the river water quality. Six catchments of rivers with different dominant sediments, located in different hydrologic areas of Lithuania, were selected as the object of the research. Such object selection allows to apply the results of the work to any catchment of a Lithuanian river. The aim of the thesis is to establish the characteristics of the migration of biogenic substances in sediments, ground and surface waters, taking into consideration climatic and geomorphological conditions of the river catchment, in order to evaluate the change in the concentration of biogenic substances in riverbank aeration zone of different sediments as well as its impact on the quality of the river water. Analytical, field investigations and experimental studies as well as mathematical modelling were applied in the work to evaluate the patterns of the change of concentration of biogenic substances in river catchments and riverbank areas.

The thesis consists of an introduction, free chapters, general conclusions and lists of references as well as the author’s publications on the topic of the PhD thesis.

The introductory chapter presents the problem of the research, the relevance of the paper, the object of research, the aim and goals of the paper are formulated as well as its scientific novelty, approval of work results and thesis statements are presented. The Introduction contains the author’s publications and conference presentations on the topic of the PhD thesis as well as the structure of the PhD thesis.

Chapter one contains the review of scientific literature on the migration of biogenic substances in the nature, the analysis of the impact of the territorial structure of a river catchment, Lithuanian river water quality studies and modelling software.

Chapter two contain the characteristics of the research object, presents the methods of analytical, field and experimental studies as well as that of mathematical modelling.

Chapter three presents the results of the research of the change in river hydrologic and hydro-chemical parameters as well as their dependence on geomorphological conditions in the catchment s and those of sediment analytical study. It’s contain the results of field investigations and experimental studies of the migration of biogenic substances in a sediment aeration zone and those of the ground water surface as well as mathematical modelling.

11 articles on the topic of the PhD thesis have been published: 4 in the reviewed scientific periodical publications and 7 in other editions. 9 presentations have been delivered on the topic of the PhD thesis in conferences in Lithuania and abroad. 2 scientific seminars have been delivered on the topic of the PhD thesis at Lulea Technical University (Sweden) and at Ryga Technical University (Latvia).
